Founder & International President, The Joshua Mission
This Mission began as a leading from the Lord for me to start a ministry in the prophetic ministry of His Word to the nations. This was back in 1991 when I was completing my doctoral thesis in Systematic Theology at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. As I completed my degree in 1993, and with more praying, I was prompted to register this Mission as a trust in Scotland that year, and as a sole proprietorship in Singapore, in 1994.
While I was still in Aberdeen in 1993, an initial group of Christians who knew me joined as the first members of the Mission. When I returned to Singapore in 1994, a small group of Christian leaders join the Mission as its first members in Singapore. This included Roland Chia, Henry Seow, PJ John, Tony Tan, Peter Manimuthu, Inban Caldwell, Joseph Teng, and Jancy Ng. At different times, Roland, Henry, PJ, Peter, and Jancy, with myself, went as a group of 4 on mission trips to India to conduct teaching conferences and speak at churches. But, over the years, due to increasing involvements in their own ministries, our meetings stopped. The trust in Aberdeen has since been dormant.
Since returning to Singapore at the end of 1993, I was sure that I was to move as the Spirit leads to develop this ministry into a full-time mission. But this was to be a gradual process while I continue to hone my own walk and ministry in Christ with lecturing at a bible school and refreshing and strengthening my leadership and ministry in parish work. So I served with Tung Ling Bible School as a lecturer in 1994-5, then as Dean of Studies in 1995-97. I was also honorary Priest-In-Charge of All Saints’ English Congregation in 1995-97, then Vicar of Chapel of the Holy Spirit, Potong Pasir, 1998-2003. In mid-2003, while Vicar of Chapel of the Holy Spirit, by prior arrangement with the Diocese of Singapore, the time came for me to step out in faith to do this Mission full time.
The first country that the Spirit led me to visit and minister the Word was India. This began from 1994 with the leaders I had mentioned who were meeting with me as members of this Mission in Singapore. But the challenge was that after each visit, the local leaders we appointed to continue to build the ministry in the country never fulfilled their part. So each visit was a new beginning with no build up, except for fellowship with those we have gotten to know. After the group in Singapore dissipated, I continued these missions to India alone by working with those who welcomed me. I went at least once each year. The breakthrough came in September 2004, 10 years after the first visit, when a group of about 20 pastors who were attending a class I taught, all voluntarily decided to join the Mission. They had the vision and the enthusiasm to continue to build the network on the ministry of the Word for themselves, their churches and ministries, and to start local groups and multiply the work. The leader of this group, who has continued to lead the network until today, is Pastor Thiruthuvadass. The network in India now has over 3,000 members across more than 5 states.
Following India, Indonesia, led my Pastor Andrew Hendro, Nepal, led by Pastor Dhan Lama, joined the network. Indonesia has now over 1,500 members. Nepal has about the same number. Then, in the years that followed, came Sri Lanka, now led by Pastor Israel, Pakistan, led by Pastor Kashif, and Myanmar, led by Pastor Daniel Kui Htin. Each country has between 50 to a few hundred members each. There are a few members in Nigeria, but no network. Over 2018 to 2019 was a jump in membership from countries in Africa, including Burundi, led by Nestor Ndizeye, Congo DRC, led by Jacques Maombi, Kenya, led by Boniface Ojode, Rwanda, led by Uribikiye Pierre, Tanzania, led by Ezekiel Joseph, and Uganda, led by Bossa John, and the inclusion of Malaysia, from Asia, led by Victor Sidhu. Each country has between a handful to a few hundred members.
The vision and challenge that the Lord has given us is to aim for 30 countries. We are now at half the number, if you include Singapore. It is, of course, our prayer, that the Spirit will enable us to do so in His time and in His way, so that the Father is glorified in us and through us. Hallelujah!
